What is NNS?

The Nashville Number System (NNS) is a method of musical notation based on scale degrees. It uses numbers 1-7 to represent chords, allows easy transpositions, and facilitates quick communication among musicians:

• 1 = Tonic (e.g., C in C key)
• 2 = Supertonic (e.g., D in C key)
• 3 = Mediant (e.g., E in C key)
• 4 = Subdominant (e.g., F in C key)
• 5 = Dominant (e.g., G in C key)
• 6 = Submediant (e.g., A in C key)
• 7 = Leading Tone (e.g., B in C key)

Chords are indicated by these numbers, with - for minor chords and ° for diminished chords. The system allows easy key changes and quick understanding of chord progressions. For example, 1 - 4 - 5 - 1 in C major translates to C - F - G - C.
